THE BEER
With the customer in mind, Blue Blood Brewing Company focuses on brewing well-balanced beers. As each new beer is being developed and tested, the flavors have to balance out. There can’t be one profile that overtakes another or becomes extreme. The Blue Blood philosophy is in balance. One example of this balance is its PEPPERCORN SAISON made with Nebraska honey. The peppercorn is present, but it does not overpower; the malt and yeast create a good balanced flavor.
The Blue Blood standard lineup is pretty typical of most breweries, covering the bases of American pale ales, pilsners, extra special bitters and wheat beers. From its main beers and seasonal flavors, Blue Blood is always growing and developing new products for its 10 Series and Outlaw Series.
One specific year-round Blue Blood beer is the 834-HAPPY AS ALE (4.6 percent ABV), an American pale ale that features a slight citrus flavor with late hop additions. This is one of my favorites specifically because it features hops grown right here in the great state of Nebraska. Sourced from a local farm only fifty minutes away, Rhynalds Hop Growers in Prague, Nebraska, the hops are top-of-the-line fresh. We do not think you can have a more freshly brewed beer when the main ingredient and brewing all take place within such a short distance. Talk about farm to table.
The 1327 POD ’S ESB (5.6 percent ABV) was one of Blue Blood’s first beers brewed. It was named for owner Brian Podwinski, whose love for extra special bitters recipes from his first time homebrewing influenced this particular brew. The 1335 WICKED SNOUT (6.4 percent ABV) is a farmhouse ale named for a Nebraska farm boy. The namesake of this beer worked hard on his family farm, and one of his chores was dealing with the pigs. Those wicked little pigs never seemed to make friends and brought about the name of this beer. With 6.4 percent ABV, this beer will sneak up on you if you are not careful, just like those pigs on the farm.
Our favorite Blue Bloods seasonal beer is the 6-4-3 DOUBLE PLAY PILSNER (5.25 percent ABV), brewed in partnership with the Lincoln Salt Dogs, Lincoln’s semiprofessional baseball team. This beer is wonderful to enjoy during a baseball game; you likely won’t stop at just one. It’s easy drinking while enjoying all nine innings (heck, even into extra innings if necessary). It’s awesome to be able to drink a local beer while supporting the local baseball team.
The 1800 BIG LOG WHEAT (5 percent ABV) is the beer to enjoy during the summertime and possibly during a round of golf. This wheat beer is Blue Blood’s take on a weizen style of wheat, with great spice notes of clove coming through, making this a great change to your everyday American wheat. Originally brewed for a local golf course, Wilderness Ridge Lodge in Lincoln, the name comes from the huge logs used to build the lodge you see on the can, according to the brewery’s website.
